Trump’s Improbable History

A couple of days ago Donald Trump sat surrounded by his lackey cabinet and rambled for ninety-minutes about things he knows little of. The one thing I paid close attention to was his explanation of why the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.  History records several reasons for the invasion including the desire to increase Soviet influence in Southcentral Asia and to support the failing communist government of Afganistan.

What history doesn’t note is that the Soviets were motivated because terrorists were crossing the Afghanistan-Soviet border and threatening Soviet security. This historical version comes from whatever part of Trump’s brain that lacks respect for truth and is willing to rewrite history to suit whatever spontaneous need enters his head.

During his ninety-minute rant, he also claimed that he would make a great general. This is nothing new and just fits with all the claims of greatness he spews forth on a regular basis.

At some point in all this, I was reminded of the Bullwinkle and Rocky Show of the early ’60s. A regular segment was Peabody’s Improbable History featuring a dog named Mr. Peabody and his adopted human son, Sherman. Peabody invented a time machine that the two used to revisit and report a history far different from accepted fact. Of course, the object was humor. Far different than what Trump’s objectives are.

Maybe the important difference between Trump and Mr. Peabody is that with Peabody we could turn the TV off and nothing bad happened in the world. Trump doesn’t provide us that reality.
