This was the era of the SDS, the Black Panthers, the Weather Underground and other militant, anarchists, groups that were making a name for themselves. In the spirit of that time, many of those participating in the discussion were of the mindset that the state’s schools simply needed to be shut down, torn down, and rebuilt from the ground up. I had a person call me this morning regarding a Sunday news program she’d watched. Mainly she just wanted to voice her belief that the only goal of the political right was to defeat Obama in 2012. She also voiced her belief that the right was employing any means necessary to do so, including fear tactics.
I didn’t bother telling her she was preaching to the choir but after the conversation ended I read an article on The Daily Beast about right-wing presidential candidate, Herman Cain, saying he supported a community’s right to deny Muslims a permit to build a mosque in their town. He based his opinion on insisting their goal was to subvert our way of life by inserting Sharia Law into our legal system.
Sad thing is, fear works.
