The mass shooting at Florida’s Parkland High School took place just a year ago today. In the following year, much has taken place but even more, has not taken place.
A huge anti-gun violence movement, led by students, has evolved and prompted several major successes at the state level. At the federal level its been pretty much status quo with the gun lobby still owning the majority of the GOP and some Democratic votes.
A day before the one-year anniversary of Parkland the Democratically-led House Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would require universal background checks for all gun sales. The vote was 23 for and 15 against. I’ll let you guess who/what the 15 were. This bill will probably never reach Trump and if it did he certainly wouldn’t sign it. There’s simply too much Republican opposition in the Senate.
Parkland students are still involved in the anti-gun violence movement and their cause. They continue to remain vocal and to warn politicians everywhere that they have not seen nor heard the last of these future voters and leaders. Ignore the youth at your own peril.
