Let’s talk about the Confederate flag

The former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, recently stated that the Confederate Flag had been hijacked by Dylann Roof, the white nationalists who murdered nine innocent churchgoers in Charleston, SC several years ago.  Haley, appearing on Glen Beck’s radio program, claimed that to most people of South Carolina the Confederate Flag represented a history of “service, sacrifice, and heritage”.

Having been born in SC and spending a lot of time there during my life I never saw the stars and bars as being anything other than a symbol of racism and treason. The emblem of a failed state that imposed the worst of human conditions upon millions and that later cost the lives of hundreds of thousands in order to bring it to an end.

Regardless of what I think it is interesting to hear what an informed and thinking Southerner thinks. I was recently made aware of a series of YouTube videos posted by a man named Beau. I don’t know Beau’s last name and all he says about himself on his YouTube channel is that he is, “a southern journalist who is tired of a lack of common sense.”

I’ve watched a couple of his videos now and while not fully agreeing with him I have still benefited from the experience. Having recently been in a Facebook discussion about Haley’s statement I thought the following from Beau’s “Let’s Talk About” series was worth publishing. I also thought making my readers aware of Beau could have value.
