In an earlier post I commented on the boondoggle taking place as a result of the Congressional Republicans refusing to approve funding to continue a significant number of airport renovation projects. Well, this evening it was announced that a “deal” had been worked out and the 74,000 workers who had been laid off will soon be back at work.
The tragedy is that the entire fight was over Republicans wanting to do away with subsidies to smaller airports amounting to $16 million a year. In doing so the government has been loosing $30 million dollars a day in lost tax revenue and other associated costs. Total unrecoverable revenue losses are in excess of $350 million dollars.
I hope nobody really questions why the American people have such a stunned look on their faces.
All last year we the people heard how the GOP was going to return America to prosperity with the creation of jobs. So, we the people bit the bullet and tossed a bunch of them into Congress. But, eight months later there are not more jobs. The economy is beginning to double tank and here in Highland County, Ohio it was just announced that the unemployment number has increased to over fourteen percent. We are now the fourth most unemployed county in the state. Continue reading Where are those jobs?→
There should be a law requiring that when a politician accuses another politician of “playing politics” he/she should have a quarter-inch of their tongue cut off. Now that sounds like a Sharia law I could go for! 🙂
“You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. You can lead a man to knowledge but you can’t make him think.” These blues lyrics are unfortunately too familiar to a teacher.
My daughter recently noticed a female ruby-throated hummingbird fluttering around a branch hanging over our swimming pool. After a long period of observation she finally discovered the reason for the bird’s activity, a very small nest was the focus of Mama Ruby Throat’s attention. Jennie came and borrowed my camera and took a series of wonderful photos. Here’s the one I think is best.
The threat of Sharia law superseding the US Constitution and over 200 years of constitutional precedent is such a non-issue it’s incredible that any state is giving it serious consideration. Of all the major social, educational, economic, and political issues facing every level of government in America, why are legislatures giving this the light of day?
My only conclusion is, it is fear driven legislation whose purpose is purely for political posturing.
If you’ve followed my writings over the years you know I am always in search of a good place to eat. Recently my wife and I have been enjoying EAT in Hillsboro. Right next door is a place called Vickie’s Home Cooking which someone reported to have, “the world’s best onion rings.” Well, that’s quite a claim but if you’ve eaten at Vickie’s and would like to comment on your experience, please do. In 1999 the US had a budget surplus and it was predicted that by 2009 we’d be debt free for the first time since Andrew Jackson’s administration. Well, after two terms of “W”, two major military engagements, several unfunded tax cuts, and Medicare Part B (unfunded entitlement expansion) we find ourselves on the brink of economic collapse. If that doesn’t deserve a WTF, nothing does!
In the late 1960s I led a discussion at a California junior college regarding the then current condition of California’s public schools. This was the era of the SDS, the Black Panthers, the Weather Underground and other militant, anarchists, groups that were making a name for themselves. In the spirit of that time, many of those participating in the discussion were of the mindset that the state’s schools simply needed to be shut down, torn down, and rebuilt from the ground up. It would result in educational anarchy, a decades worth of young people might not have access to any formal education, but many present believed that out of the mayhem would arise a new and much better public education system. My wife and I are always looking for a new place to eat and luckily one just popped up in our backyard, Hillsboro. The former McGee’s is under new ownership and is serving a menu unlike anything in the area.
The new owner, chef Avery Elliot, is a Hillsboro native and graduate of the Hocking College’s Culinary School. Chef Elliot served as head chef at The Caves in Jamaica, one of the Caribbean’s top twenty-five best rated resorts, from 2005 until returning to Hillsboro this spring. I had a person call me this morning regarding a Sunday news program she’d watched. Mainly she just wanted to voice her belief that the only goal of the political right was to defeat Obama in 2012. She also voiced her belief that the right was employing any means necessary to do so, including fear tactics.
I didn’t bother telling her she was preaching to the choir but after the conversation ended I read an article on The Daily Beast about right-wing presidential candidate, Herman Cain, saying he supported a community’s right to deny Muslims a permit to build a mosque in their town. He based his opinion on insisting their goal was to subvert our way of life by inserting Sharia Law into our legal system.
